The base is located in the southwestern corner of the New York City borough of Brooklyn surrounded by the communities of Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights and Bensonhurst. New York, Boston, New Jersey are some of the surrounding cities. The base serves United States Army. The base is home to the North Atlantic Division, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The base occupies 50 acres. Approx 5000 troops are based there.

The primary mission of the base is to provide the New York metropolitan area with Military Installation support for the Army National Guard and the United States Army Reserve. The base was built in 1825. The base has been named for the first Secretary of the Treasury, Alexander Hamilton. The base does not provide any on-post housing.
